JEDEC Flash Storage Summits a Success in Shanghai, Tapiei and San Jose

ARLINGTON, Va., USA - APRIL 16, 2009- From China to California, JEDEC’s Flash Storage Summits on the future of flash memory attracted a combined audience of over 800 engineers and product designers. Held in Shanghai, China on March 31; Taipei, Taiwan on April 2 and San Jose, California on April 6-7, the events focused on the latest proposals and upcoming standards for flash memory, a technology widely used for high density, low power non-volatile data storage in mobile and PC markets. Speakers and workshop instructors included representatives from leading industry companies such as Agilent, Aigo, CST, Denali, FormFactor, Numonyx, PSC, Qualcomm, RIM, Samsung, Seagate, Spansion, and Toshiba

The three city tour began in an atmosphere of charged excitement on March 31 in Shanghai, where attendees packed the main ballroom at the Shanghai Courtyard Marriott. Co-sponsored by the China Electronics Standardization Institute (CESI), the Summit was widely supported by numerous Chinese and international industry associations. Mr. Bi Keyun, Vice Chairman of China Semiconductor Industry Association, gave the keynote address. Participants held an active Q&A with presenters, and offered overwhelmingly enthusiastic feedback on the event.

Interest in JEDEC solid state drive standards was high in Taipei on April 2, where over 350 professionals convened at the Grand Formosa Regent for the event, cosponsored by the Taiwan Semiconductor Industry Association. Attendees expressed appreciation at having the opportunity to interact directly with JEDEC member company representatives involved in standards development: “Almost everything in the market was mentioned; it was a wonderful chance for each one of us to gain exposure to the technical aspects and market forecast for flash,” commented one summit attendee.

The Summits concluded in San Jose, California on April 6-7, where participants gathered for a day of presentations and discussions concerning a wide range of flash-related topics, including mobile storage applications, forecast and market trends for flash, universal flash storage, flash cards, validation for flash memory systems, solid state drives, and more. On day two, in-depth workshop sessions on solid state drives and flash components/e-MMC V4.4/UFS proved to be popular and were filled to capacity.
